Suspended high in the dome of the Observation Deck you’ll find Cloud Cities Barcelona, a playful sculpture by the internationally renowned artist Tomás Saraceno. This work is the artist’s only permanent installation in Europe, and visitors can explore its interior by moving through 113 spaces that symbolize condensed water droplets forming its structure, covering a surface of 130 m³.
With 6 kilometers of tensioned cable connected by 5,000 nodes, a web is formed that holds the various spaces in the air as visitors move through them. These connections, along with the experience of navigating an environment unfamiliar to people, represent the artist’s message about the interdependence and interconnectedness of all humans and living beings, where the actions of one affect the entire community.

Cloud Cities Barcelona is based on Tomás Saraceno’s artistic research project Cloud Cities. It is a concept that reimagines cities by focusing on an ethical connection between the environment, the planet, and the living beings that inhabit it. From a conceptual perspective, Saraceno proposes a sculpture inspired by the “cloud cities” of his imagination, one of his main areas of study as an artist.
This work offers multiple interpretations, starting with the playful, as visitors can move through it and enjoy a moment of leisure inside. It is also reflective, encouraging contemplation of the interdependence and relationships between living beings and their environment, represented by movement within the sculpture’s confined space, where each person’s motion affects everyone else.

Tomás Saraceno is an internationally renowned artist, born in Argentina, whose projects engage with forms of life, their formation, and rethink the dominant threads of knowledge today. For more than two decades, his work has led him to develop projects aimed at reimagining the co-creation of the atmosphere, such as Museo Aero Solar (2007–) and the Aerocene Foundation (2015–), with the goal of achieving a carbon-free society.
Additionally, Saraceno created Arachnophilia, an interdisciplinary community focused on research that emerged from more than ten years of collaboration between the artist, humans, spiders, and their webs.
Tomás Saraceno’s work addresses issues of social and environmental justice, as well as the imagination of new ways of relating to the planet. The goal of his work as an artist with local communities, scientists, and institutions worldwide is to seek an equitable balance of human, technological, and biological diversity.
Within the framework of his artistic practice, Saraceno has undertaken residencies at the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (2012–), at the Atelier Calder (2010), and has delivered lectures at Princeton, Columbia, the Centre Pompidou, Heral Design Forum, and the Hirshhorn Museum, among others.
His work has also been the subject of solo exhibitions and installations in museums and institutions such as The Shed (New York, 2022), Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2018), the Museo de Arte Moderno (Buenos Aires, 2017), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, 2012). Saraceno has also participated in numerous festivals and biennials, such as the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale (2020) and the 53rd and 58th Venice Biennales (2009, 2019).
